The Franchisor/Franchisee Relationship Explained

The franchisee/franchisor relationship is sometimes equated with marriage and occasionally, with parent-child relationship. Whatever be the business model, in order to become a successful franchisor, you need to have successful franchisees. There are many things that franchisors must do to ensure that the success of franchisees grow steadily. The first thing, of course, is carrying out effective two-way communication with your franchisees. In today’s world of faxes and emails, good old-fashioned verbal communications are becoming rare. But top franchisors know that nothing beats a clear, face-to-face conversation with the franchisee in order to encourage him or to train him in running the business.

So, always keep the line of communication open with your franchisee. If they feel that you are there to help him in his good as well as bad times; then the franchisee will be more motivated towards success and share its achievements with you. Secondly, to keep up the smooth run of your franchisee, you have to discipline him like a good parent. They are free businessmen; but by agreeing to your franchising rules, they are bound to run the establishments in the way you prescribe. You must see that all stringent quality checks and customer care services are at par with your companies; otherwise you will suffer due to mishandling of your brand name. This is very true in case of food industry where a proverbial bad egg can ruin the rest. Hence, for the sake of their success, you as a franchisor will have to be a bit strict!

But do not suffocate the franchisee so much that his or her business won’t develop. If you doggedly follow rules and regulations without consulting the ground reality of a franchisee’s position, then it will hamper the success of the business. A good franchisor always listens to the franchisee and does not always impose its decisions on them. What works for the company in one place will not necessarily work in another. So, being a flexible franchisor is another key to make the businesses of your franchisees successful!
