Regional or National: Which Makes the Best Franchise Choice?
When you go out to buy a franchise, you have the choice of taking either a regional franchise or a national franchise. A regional franchise has its presence in one section of the country, but not in all the regions whereas a national franchise is such a player who has market share in most parts of the country. Both have their pros and cons and here are some points that can help you choose your franchise opportunity.
Regional franchise
The regional franchise will definitely attract an investor, if the franchise opportunity is considerably good. It can also appeal to people keen on becoming master franchises. A number of best franchises started as regional ones and then developed one region at a time through the system of master franchise. So, if you have great business-sense and some experience, you can think about becoming the franchisee of a regional franchise. Since, in most cases, they are developing in your area, they will do their best in order to help you succeed, so that you become their showpiece franchise unit. What’s more, since they are new to your area, they will have flexible franchise agreements. They will allow you to modify or change some aspects of the business according to your market.
But, before you choose to buy a franchise that is regional, you are supposed to confirm whether it will suit your market. You will need to check out the demography, income level of the users/customers of the regional franchise before deciding to buy one in your town. Moreover, the training and support system may not be that developed and if you are one of the first franchisees, you may have very little to take reference from. Besides, you will have to develop the brand-name when you are starting a franchise from a regional player. So, a person with great understanding of the market and excellent marketing expertise will do well, if he buys a franchise from a regional franchisor.
National player
In contrast, a national player has a much developed franchise system and so, can provide better support and training. The brand name of the franchise will also be widely known and so, you won’t need to develop it. Everything will be taught to you and if you abide by the instructions carefully, you will find success easily. Hence, it’s better for a novice to start a franchise of a national player. You will also have other franchisees to look for and can compare other cities/towns from the same region to look into the viability of the option.
But here, the national players will be stricter with the franchise agreement. Since they have already made their presence felt in different markets, they are sometimes reluctant to try out something new, which you may think as revolutionary. Also, the franchise fee can be a bit higher than a regional franchise from the same concept.
***
Whichever franchise you start with, one thing you have to make sure that you don’t become an “orphan” franchise. This happens when you buy a franchise that is new to your market. If the company doesn’t actively start developing that market, you will be left to fend for yourself! It can happen to both regional and national franchises. So, even if you have what it takes to succeed, the reluctance of the franchisor can doom your business. Hence, be as practical as possible when you look into various franchise opportunities.
