How To Get the Most Out of Your Training Program
The training program of the franchisor is the base of your success as a franchisee. But, many of the franchisees enter the franchising business without any prior knowledge of the line of work. For them, the training is the first step in knowing the business. Even if you come from business background, you have to keep in mind that each business is run in its unique way; so, you are supposed to learn about this business model from scratch. Hence, getting the most out of the training program is a must. Remember, a major portion of the franchise fee that you pay in the beginning is for this training program, so try to get as much as possible out of it!
Many franchisors start their training program by sending some literature or CD-ROM for the franchisees to read. The franchisees are required to go through the materials before they attend the main training session at the company designated location. Usually, the first part of the training program is held at the company headquarters. Through any effective training program, you can learn about the following things:
• Details about the company’s products/services.
• How to find a good site, if it’s not a home-based business.
• How to negotiate the lease-term and get the required permits and other licenses.
• How to design the building.
• Whom to hire and how.
• Marketing basics.
• Accounting process.
• Supplies and inventory.
• The required inventory ad-equipments.
All these things will be taught to you in a classroom by skilled people of the franchisor. Sometimes, a successful franchisee is also brought to offer a practical point of view. You are supposed to treat the training program like any class that you attend…keep notes, ask questions and clear any doubts. After the classroom session gets over, several franchisors send associates to train the franchisees at any of its actual locations. Thus, they can learn about the running of the business first hand. The scene then shifts to the location of the franchisees. A representative of the company stays with the franchisees and guide them after the “grand opening” of their store. This, in short, is the total training schedule. However, it’s not a one-time affair. Your franchisors will send you newsletters regularly, hold seminars and regional meetings. And if anything new is introduced in its franchising system, you will be trained for using it as well. Hence, the training program of your franchising business, in a sense, is never over!
